A Masculine Birthday Card with Cattails and Peaceful Pine

Not every birthday card needs to be bright, floral, or covered in glitter — and this one proves it. This design comes straight from our last Team meeting, where Kimberley, one of my downline, taught us how to make it. She wanted to create something with a little more weight and structure for the guys on our card list, so I pulled out the Valley in Bloom Designer Series Paper and let its soft plaids and geometric prints set the tone for a clean, layered, masculine design.

Building the Background

I started with a panel of the plaid pattern from Valley in Bloom, matted it onto a strip of Peaceful Pine cardstock, and layered it over a Basic White base card. The muted, hazy plaid gives just enough texture without pulling focus from the focal image — exactly the kind of understated backdrop a masculine card calls for.

To add a second layer of interest, I cut a panel from the coordinating diamond-and-fleur print in the same Valley in Bloom collection, matted it onto Peaceful Pine cardstock again, and popped it up on the right side of the card front. The repetition of the same green cardstock mat ties both papers together and keeps the color story cohesive.

The Cattails

The star of this card is the cattail image from the Scalloped Wishes stamp set, stamped in Peaceful Pine ink onto a Basic White panel. There's something about cattails that just reads "masculine" and "outdoorsy" — they work beautifully for nature lovers, fishermen, or anyone who'd rather get a card that looks like it belongs near a lake than one covered in bows.

To dress up the edges of that cattail panel without adding anything too delicate or fussy, I used the Rotary Perforating tip, one of the interchangeable tips for the Take a Pick Tool, to perforate a line just inside the border. It's a small detail, but it adds a nice bit of handmade texture and a subtle stitched-paper look along the edge.

Three 2026–2028 In-Color Peaceful Pine Dots sit across the top of the cattail panel for a simple pop of shine and color — just enough embellishment to finish the design without overpowering the natural, earthy feel of the rest of the card.

The Sentiment

For the "Happy Birthday" label on the front, I stamped the sentiment from the Loveliest Tree stamp set onto a Peaceful Pine cardstock label using Peaceful Pine ink — a nice tone-on-tone effect that keeps things subtle and sophisticated.

Inside, I stamped a coordinating sentiment from the Framed All Around stamp set in Peaceful Pine ink, along with another set of cattails stamped in a softer application, using the stamp off technique, of the same ink for continuity from front to back.

Final Thoughts

This card came together as a great reminder that masculine cards don't need to be complicated — a strong color palette, a nature-inspired stamp, and a few well-placed textural details go a long way. The combination of Valley in Bloom Designer Series Paper with Peaceful Pine ink gave this card a calm, outdoorsy feel that I think will be perfect for the next birthday on my list.

Gears and Textures Birthday Card

This card is all about bold texture, movement, and a little bit of attitude—perfect for celebrating someone who appreciates a unique, masculine design!

The background sets the tone with the striking Painted Illusions Designer Series Paper, bringing in those vibrant greens and dynamic lines that feel full of energy. To build on that industrial vibe, I layered in elements from the Gears and Textures Dies, creating a focal point that feels mechanical, dimensional, and just a little edgy.

One of my favorite details is the repeated “DUDE” text from the soon to be released Thanks Man Stamp Set. It adds personality and a playful touch that makes this card feel fun and modern—perfect for a birthday guy who deserves something a little different.

Front and center, the sentiment from the Sincerely Noted Mix & Match Ephemera (available May 5) keeps things clean and balanced. The soft color of the label contrasts beautifully with the bold background, letting that “Happy Happy Happy birthday” message shine.

This card would pair perfectly with a movie night—especially something action-packed or sci-fi inspired—making it a great all-around birthday celebration piece!

Details:

  • Gears and Textures Dies for layered dimension
  • Painted Illusions Designer Series Paper background
  • Thanks Man Stamp Set for repeated “DUDE” text
  • Sincerely Noted Mix & Match Ephemera for sentiment

Whether you’re crafting for a gearhead, a movie lover, or just someone who enjoys a cool, modern look, this design is sure to impress!

Virtual Card Making Retreat Card #9

This card was the ninth card we made during the 2026 Virtual Card Making Retreat.

The retreat included two stamp sets, one was an exclusive stamp set, the other one was the soon to be released Forever Florals Bundle. The dies from the Forever Florals Bundle were used to make the elongated octagons and the leaves.

The “Happy Birthday” sentiment is from the exclusive stamp set.

Moody Palette Glossy Dots Embellishments, which are also included with the retreat, were randomly added to the card front.
The inside of the cards were also completed during the retreat. The right side of this card was stamped with one of the stamps from the exclusive stamp set to give it an old world look.
Envelopes should never go naked, so we also added some stamping and embossing to the left side of the envelope too.

I hope you enjoyed my card for today!
