A Masculine Birthday Card with Cattails and Peaceful Pine

Not every birthday card needs to be bright, floral, or covered in glitter — and this one proves it. This design comes straight from our last Team meeting, where Kimberley, one of my downline, taught us how to make it. She wanted to create something with a little more weight and structure for the guys on our card list, so I pulled out the Valley in Bloom Designer Series Paper and let its soft plaids and geometric prints set the tone for a clean, layered, masculine design.

Building the Background

I started with a panel of the plaid pattern from Valley in Bloom, matted it onto a strip of Peaceful Pine cardstock, and layered it over a Basic White base card. The muted, hazy plaid gives just enough texture without pulling focus from the focal image — exactly the kind of understated backdrop a masculine card calls for.

To add a second layer of interest, I cut a panel from the coordinating diamond-and-fleur print in the same Valley in Bloom collection, matted it onto Peaceful Pine cardstock again, and popped it up on the right side of the card front. The repetition of the same green cardstock mat ties both papers together and keeps the color story cohesive.

The Cattails

The star of this card is the cattail image from the Scalloped Wishes stamp set, stamped in Peaceful Pine ink onto a Basic White panel. There's something about cattails that just reads "masculine" and "outdoorsy" — they work beautifully for nature lovers, fishermen, or anyone who'd rather get a card that looks like it belongs near a lake than one covered in bows.

To dress up the edges of that cattail panel without adding anything too delicate or fussy, I used the Rotary Perforating tip, one of the interchangeable tips for the Take a Pick Tool, to perforate a line just inside the border. It's a small detail, but it adds a nice bit of handmade texture and a subtle stitched-paper look along the edge.

Three 2026–2028 In-Color Peaceful Pine Dots sit across the top of the cattail panel for a simple pop of shine and color — just enough embellishment to finish the design without overpowering the natural, earthy feel of the rest of the card.

The Sentiment

For the "Happy Birthday" label on the front, I stamped the sentiment from the Loveliest Tree stamp set onto a Peaceful Pine cardstock label using Peaceful Pine ink — a nice tone-on-tone effect that keeps things subtle and sophisticated.

Inside, I stamped a coordinating sentiment from the Framed All Around stamp set in Peaceful Pine ink, along with another set of cattails stamped in a softer application, using the stamp off technique, of the same ink for continuity from front to back.

Final Thoughts

This card came together as a great reminder that masculine cards don't need to be complicated — a strong color palette, a nature-inspired stamp, and a few well-placed textural details go a long way. The combination of Valley in Bloom Designer Series Paper with Peaceful Pine ink gave this card a calm, outdoorsy feel that I think will be perfect for the next birthday on my list.

Making a Splash: A Summer Birthday Card

Summer is in full swing, and there's no better way to celebrate a July birthday than with a card that's bursting with sunshine, poolside vibes, and a little sparkle. Today I'm sharing a fun beach-themed birthday card that came together using some of my favorite summer products — think flip flops, sunglasses, an inner tube, and a tall glass of lemonade!

Getting Started

I began by adhering Summer Happiness Washi Tape onto a panel of Basic White cardstock. This washi tape is such a great shortcut for adding pattern and color without any stamping — plus it gave me the perfect base for cutting out some of my embellishments later on.

That washi-covered panel was layered onto a Coastal Cabana cardstock mat, which was then layered onto a Strawberry Slush cardstock panel, and finally adhered to a Basic White cardstock card base. This layered mat approach adds just the right amount of dimension and color-blocking before any of the fun details even go on.

The Fun Details

No beach party is complete without flip flops! I cut these out using the Summer Happiness dies, paired with Strawberry Slush and Darling Duckling cardstock for that classic pink-and-yellow combo.

The inner tube and beach ball are from the Splash and Relax bundle. I stamped both images onto Basic White cardstock and then cut them out using the coordinating dies for clean, crisp edges.

For the sentiment, I turned to the Loveliest Tree stamp set, stamping "Happy Birthday" in Coastal Cabana ink onto an oval die-cut from the Classic Labels Mix & Match Ephemera Pack, which became the perfect focal point nestled among all the summer icons.

The Finishing Touches

To really make this card shine, I added Rhinestone Jewels to the sunglasses, the flip flops, and scattered a few more around as accents. There's something about a little sparkle that instantly elevates a card from cute to "wow."

Inside the Card

The inside is just as fun as the outside! The sentiment — "It's your day to make a splash" — comes from the Splash and Relax stamp set, stamped in Coastal Cabana ink.

I used the masking technique to stamp the inner tube and beach ball onto the inside panel, layering them so they overlap naturally, just like they would floating together in a pool.

To finish it off, I cut a glass of lemonade out of cardstock-backed Summer Happiness Washi Tape using the coordinating die — a sweet little detail that ties the inside back to the washi tape used on the front.

On the Envelope

Even the envelope got some summer love! I adhered a strip of Summer Happiness Washi Tape to the envelope flap, so the fun starts before the recipient even opens the card.

Final Thoughts

This card was such a joy to create — every element, from the layered cardstock to the die-cut flip flops and the sparkly rhinestones, came together to capture that carefree, sun-soaked feeling of summer. Whether it's for a poolside birthday or just to bring a little sunshine to someone's mailbox, this design is sure to make a splash!
