A Sweet "1" Shaped Card for a First Birthday

There's something extra special about making a card for a baby's first birthday! This card was inspired by Anila Dikay.

The Shape

Instead of a traditional rectangle, the card is cut into the shape of a number "1" — free-hand, no die involved! It took a little planning to make sure the proportions worked out and that everything would still open and close properly, but I love how the fold reveals the sentiment inside as a fun surprise.

The Elephant

For the star of the show, I pulled out the retired Elephant Parade stamp and die set. This sweet little elephant was stamped in Smoky Slate ink and then colored in with Barely Blush and Smoky Slate Stampin' Blends for soft, subtle shading. There's something so charming about a baby elephant holding a bunch of balloons — it felt like the perfect fit for a first birthday theme.

Balloons and Banner

The cheerful cluster of balloons and the pennant banner across the top came together using the Meant For You Mix and Match Ephemera. I love how much color and dimension these little die-cut pieces add without a lot of extra work — they were perfect for filling out the top of the "1" and giving the card that party feel.

The Sentiment

On the front, "Happy 1st Birthday" was stamped using the retired Wild Bunch stamp set. Tucked inside the card is a second sentiment, stamped in cheerful Daffodil Delight ink from the retired Happiest Day stamp set — a little golden surprise waiting for whoever opens it.

Finishing Touches

To add just a bit of sparkle, I scattered a few Sunset Sparkle Sequins around the balloons and near the sentiment. They catch the light beautifully and add just the right amount of festive shine without overpowering the softer color palette.

Final Thoughts

This card was such a joy to put together, from the free-hand cutting of the number shape to layering in all the little details. It's proof that sometimes the best projects come from being inspired by another crafter's creativity and then making it your own. If you get a chance to try a shaped card like this, I highly recommend it — it's a fun challenge and makes for such a memorable keepsake for a first birthday!

A Cheerful CASE'd Birthday Card

I'm so excited to share this fun birthday card with you today! This one is a CASE (Copy And Selectively Edit) of a card I spotted at the March Stampin' Up! Onstage Event in Long Beach, CA, originally created by the talented Amy Combs. I loved the layout and color combo so much that I had to make my own version!

Building the Base

This card starts with a Darling Duckling cardstock card base for that bright, sunny yellow foundation. On top of that goes a Calypso Coral cardstock panel, adding a warm pop of color around the edges. To finish off the layered base, I topped it with a panel from the Beautiful Ordinary Life Designer Series Paper — that soft mint polka-dot pattern gives the whole card such a sweet, playful feel.

Party Details

All of the fun party elements — the bunting banner, the cupcake, the layered cake, the candles, and the cluster of balloons — come from the Meant For You Mix & Match Ephemera Pack. These pre-cut pieces made it so easy to build up a dimensional, festive scene without a lot of fussy cutting.

The Sentiment Label

The "Happy Birthday to you" label is a bit of a labor of love:

● Pool Party label border was stamped using the Exciting Times stamp set in Pool Party ink.

● The "Happy Birthday to You" greeting was stamped separately in Calypso Coral ink, then cut out using the Rounded Rectangle Punch.

● Behind the sentiment sits a Darling Duckling label — stamped in Darling Duckling ink and fussy cut by hand — which peeks out just enough to frame the whole piece.

To finish it off the card front, I added a few Sunset Sparkle Sequins for some sparkly accent color scattered across the panel.

Inside the Card

Opening the card reveals a simple, elegant sentiment: "Sending wishes for the happiest birthday," stamped in Calypso Coral ink using the Framed All Around stamp set. The trio of stamped balloons from the Pretty Party Kit, in the bottom corner echoes the balloons on the front, tying the whole design together from cover to inside.

Final Thoughts

I love how the Calypso Coral, Pool Party, and Darling Duckling play off each other here — it's cheerful without being over the top, and the layered ephemera pieces give it just the right amount of dimension. Huge thanks to Amy Combs for the original inspiration at Onstage — it's always so much fun to put my own spin on a design I fall in love with!
