Hit the Road: A Summer Celebration Card

There's something about a little VW bus that instantly says "summer road trip," and that's exactly the vibe I was going for with this card. Bright, breezy, and packed with sunny details, this one came together using the Summer Happiness Washi Tape along with two fun Mix and Match Ephemera packs.

Building the Base

I started simple, layering up the foundation before adding any of the fun bits:

  • Card base: Basic White cardstock, folded into a standard card shape
  • Next layer: Strawberry Slush cardstock, popped on top of the base with a little bit of an angle to give a pop of contrasting color around the edges
  • Top panel: A piece of Basic White cardstock with the Summer Happiness Washi Tape adhered directly to it, creating that sweet floral-and-sunshine patterned background

Layering the panels this way gives the card some dimension before a single embellishment is even added — that little sliver of Strawberry Slush peeking out around the white panel ties the whole color scheme together.

The Star of the Show: The VW Bus

That sweet pink-and-orange Volkswagen bus is from the Under the Sun Mix and Match Ephemera Pack, and it's easily my favorite element on this card. The little "I Luv U" license plate and heart detail on the front make it feel just as sweet as it is summery. I popped it up for a bit of dimension so it lifts right off the page.

Right next to the bus, the cat-eye sunglasses and that gorgeous blue daisy are part of the washi tape pattern itself — no extra cutting required there, they're baked right into the background.

Sentiment and Sparkle

For the sentiment, I reached for the Sincerely Noted Mix and Match Ephemera Pack and pulled the cheerful yellow "Celebrate!" tag — the perfect word for a card that could work for a birthday, a graduation, or really any reason to celebrate.

To finish off the front, I added Rhinestone Basic Jewels in a few spots:

  • One on each flip-flop strap, right where the strap would meet the foot
  • A few scattered around the card front as little sparkly accents among the florals

Those small touches of sparkle catch the light beautifully and add just the right amount of bling without overwhelming the design.

Inside the Card

Pop the card open and the celebration continues! Inside, I kept things simple with a birthday sentiment paired with an adorable glass of lemonade, fussy cut straight from the Summer Happiness Washi Tape — straw, lemon slices, and all. It's a small detail, but fussy cutting little scenes like this out of patterned washi tape is one of my favorite ways to get extra mileage out of a single sheet.

The Envelope Detail

I didn't stop at the card itself — I also fussy cut a pair of those cat-eye sunglasses from the washi tape and added them to the envelope. It's such a fun, easy way to give the whole mailed piece a cohesive, finished look before it even gets opened.

This one was such a fun, quick build, and proof that washi tape can do so much more than just line the edge of a card — fussy cutting scenes and motifs out of it turns one roll into a dozen different embellishments. Have you tried fussy cutting from washi tape before? I'd love to see what you come up with!
